Crazy Taxi is a video game franchise created by Japanese video game designer Kenji Kanno. The series was first published for arcades in 1999 and later ported to home consoles: PlayStation, Dreamcast and Sega Saturn. It features a gameplay mechanic in which the player controls a taxi driver who must race to pick up passengers and deliver them to their destination as quickly as possible; the faster the driver reaches the passenger's destination with the shortest amount of time, the more money they receive as payment. The series is known for its arcade-style gameplay which involves picking up customers and dropping them off in various places, with specific time goals to meet. It features parodies of popular people, places, and things. The title references the term "Crazy Taxi", which is used to describe drivers who can drive quickly with little regard for traffic rules. The player is an unnamed protagonist that works as a taxi driver at the fictional taxi company/gang "Crazy Taxi". The player is paid per customer dropped off at their destination within the time limit, with bonuses given if multiple pickups are dropped off at once or if they pass other Crazy Taxi drivers on the road. The player must race against three computer-controlled opponents known as "Crazy Taxi drivers" to complete the mission. The player's chosen appearance can be changed in the options menu. As with most racing games, the goal of the game is to finish a given level with a certain time limit, without hitting obstacles or falling off a cliff. Obstacles include cars, pedestrians, taxis, and construction equipment that will slow down, if not stop the player outright. There are also cameras that take pictures of any car hit by an object; these pictures will be shown at court for insurance purposes. There are two types of levels in "Crazy Taxi", which are ranked from lowest to highest level. The player is provided with a mission description at the start of each mission, and must meet certain given conditions in order to complete the mission. These missions have a time limit, with higher levels having longer time limits. For example, a level from "Repairs" in a low-level area, such as an airport or a construction yard, may only have a 30-second time limit for the entire level. On the other hand, the main courses in higher-level areas, such as an underground parking lot or a freeway, may have longer time limits. The game's primary mode has 11 difficulty levels for the player to choose from. The difficulty levels are adjusted based on time goals and number of opponents. The game also features "Time Attack", which makes use of the 3D graphics seen in PlayStation 2 version; this mode unlocks after achieving a certain score in all missions on "Normal" difficulty level. In addition, there is a bonus mission that can be unlocked by earning a score of at least 100,000 points in all missions on any difficulty level.
